Thursday's MVP award announcements officially put a bow on the 2021 season. In case you missed it, Shohei Ohtani got the unanimous vote in the American League, while Bryce Harper took home his second MVP award in the National League. Now we turn to the 2022 season. Friday brought the deadline for teams to add players to the 40-man roster before the Rule 5 Draft. Players signed at 18 years old are eligible for the Rule 5 Draft after five seasons with an organization, while players signed at 19 years old are eligible after four. Anyone selected in the draft must remain on the team's 25-man roster for the entirety of the following season. Otherwise, they may be offered back to their former club after clearing waivers. So, this typically leads to a flurry of roster moves on this day as teams move to protect their top prospects. Whether a player is added to the 40-man roster or selected in the draft, it often can accelerate their path to the majors. Akil Baddoo and Garrett Whitlock were two players selected in 2020 that made significant contributions to their new teams last season. Let's take a look at a few notable roster moves that went down on Friday.

The Yankees added a handful of prospects to their 40-man roster, led by  Everson Pereira and Oswaldo Cabrera. To make space, New York designated Clint Frazier, Rougned Odor, and Tyler Wade for assignment. The most notable here is Frazier, the fifth overall pick in the 2013 draft. The 27-year-old outfielder performed well at times but struggled to stay on the field. He hit .267/.347/.497 with 20 home runs over 406 plate appearances from 2019-2020 but struggled last season with a .186/.317/.317 slash line and five home runs across 66 games. Frazier must pass through waivers unclaimed before he can elect free agency or accept an assignment to the minors. It will be interesting to see if any clubs still see enough potential here to put in a claim.

Hunter Greene was the most notable addition to the 40-man roster by the Cincinnati Reds. The 22-year-old hard-throwing right-hander was the second overall pick in the 2017 draft. He posted a 1.98 ERA and 13.17 K/9 across 41 innings in Double-A before recording a 4.13 ERA across 65 1/3 frames in Triple-A. The Reds will likely give Greene a chance to make the Opening Day roster in Spring Training after losing Wade Miley and potentially trading a starter such as Luis Castillo or Sonny Gray

The best prospect added to a 40-man roster on Friday was Seattle outfielder Julio Rodriguez. The 20-year-old is widely regarded as one of the best prospects in baseball. Rodriguez has done nothing but mash at every level thus far. He hit an incredible .362/.461/.546 with seven homers and 16 steals while striking out at just an 18 percent rate across 206 plate appearances in Double-A last season. Whether he can handle center field might determine how quickly we see Rodriguez in the majors next season.

M.J. Melendez highlights Kansas City's additions to the 40-man roster. After hitting just nine home runs with a .163 batting average in 2019, the 22-year-old catching prospect rebounded in a big way, leading all of the minor leagues in home runs last season with 41. After a canceled 2020 minor-league season, Melendez returned a significantly improved hitter, cutting his strikeout rate drastically to help him hit .293/.413/.620 across 184 plate appearances in Triple-A last season. While Salvador Perez is entrenched as the team's backstop, the Royals could play Melendez in the outfield, third base, and designated hitter once he joins the club.
