DFS Dish: THE CJ CUP in South Carolina

Congaree Golf Club is stepping up to host this week's CJ CUP in South Carolina.

We previously saw the Tom Fazio design back at the 2021 Palmetto Championship which was won by Garrick Higgo (40/1).

The course is incredibly unique when comparing it to most PGA TOUR stops. It has generous fairways, no rough, but plenty of sandy areas to apply pressure when missing fairways. There is water in play on 10 holes so there are plenty of big numbers available for those who aren't dialed in with their irons.

Let's take a look at the grass stats to see who might be comfortable this week.

Bermuda Comfort

Congaree has a linksy feel at times but the greens are bermudagrass which is not something the links naturalists would approve of.

When heading to a course with bermudagrass greens, there is generally a theme of golfers that grew up in the Southeast feeling comfortable and outperforming their baseline.

Here are the top performers in adjusted strokes gained per round when playing courses with bermuda greens, over the last two years:

Rory McIlroy
Jon Rahm
Justin Thomas
Collin Morikawa
Viktor Hovland
Tom Kim
Tyrrell Hatton
Sam Burns
Hideki Matsuyama
Matt Fitzpatrick
Scottie Scheffler
Jordan Spieth
Corey Conners
Billy Horschel
Russell Henley

We can also look at performance versus baseline to see who shows the largest increase in performance compared to their typical scores:

Collin Morikawa
Chris Kirk
Gary Woodland
Jason Day
Emiliano Grillo
Hideki Matsuyama
Billy Horschel
Lee Hodges
Sepp Straka
Taylor Moore
Matt Kuchar
Webb Simpson
Tyrrell Hatton
Sam Burns
Rory McIlroy

Overlap List: names that show up on both lists include Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Sam Burns, Hideki Matsuyama, and Billy Horschel

Henley to heat up in South Carolina

The Georgia Bulldog has three PGA TOUR titles with two coming on bermudagrass and one on overseeded bermuda. He was 15th on the bermuda performance list above and was first off the overperformance list (16th). He'll likely fly in under the radar with a missed cut at the Sanderson Farms being his lone start of the new season. He has two top 10s in his last five starts overall, though, so the form is not too far removed.

Bermuda Burns to live up to his name

The LSU product was quickly labeled "Bermuda Burns" when he came out on TOUR and seemingly did all of his heavy lifting on weeks when the courses featured bermudagrass greens. It makes sense for someone who was born and bred in Louisiana and played all of his college golf in the Southeast. when you look at his career stats, 11 of his top 13 measured putting weeks have come on bermudagrass greens.
