FanDuel Fit: ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP @ SHERWOOD

Sherwood Country Club will play the role of host venue this week at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP.

This Nicklaus design caters to the West Coast elite during the year but this week it will be 78 pro golfers that go head-to-head with Sherwood.

The course features bentgrass fairways and greens with ryegrass rough. The greens are larger than TOUR average and will likely run on the fast side of the spectrum with a target stimp of 12.5 feet to start the week.

Diving into some course-fit angles, let's have a look at golfers that might like the lack of overall course length here and also look at some golfers that prefer golfing in this region of the country.

Short Courses

Sherwood Country Club is a par 72 that plays just 7,073 yards. Very short by TOUR standards.

Let's see who has performed best on short courses, over the last two years:

Rory McIlroy
Adam Scott
Jon Rahm
Justin Thomas
Xander Schauffele
Patrick Cantlay
Tony Finau
Hideki Matsuyama
Webb Simpson
Jason Kokrak
Patrick Reed
Jason Day
Matthew Fitzpatrick
Collin Morikawa
Lanto Griffin

We can also look at a golfer's performance versus their baseline to see who over-performs most. Here is that list:

Gary Woodland
Rory McIlroy
Phil Mickelson
Danny Lee
Andrew Landry
Paul Casey
Cameron Champ
Kevin Na
Adam Hadwin
Nick Taylor
Matt Kuchar
Tyrrell Hatton
Tyler Duncan
Brendan Steele
Hideki Matsuyama

Overlap List: names that show up on both lists include Rory McIlroy and Hideki Matsuyama.

We stay out West for another week so we can continue to target golfers with previous success in this part of the country.

Here are the top performers in the West, over the last two years:

Xander Schauffele
Rory McIlroy
Jon Rahm
Justin Thomas
Webb Simpson
Jason Day
Patrick Cantlay
Adam Scott
Collin Morikawa
Marc Leishman
Justin Rose
Tony Finau
Hideki Matsuyama
Patrick Reed
Daniel Berger

We can also look at a golfer's performance versus their baseline to see who over-performs most. Here is that list:

Marc Leishman
Harry Higgs
Jason Day
Mark Hubbard
Phil Mickelson
Tom Hoge
Andrew Landry
Xander Schauffele
Justin Rose
Cameron Champ
Talor Gooch
Adam Hadwin
Lanto Griffin
Daniel Berger
Collin Morikawa

Overlap List: names that show up on both lists include Marc Leishman, Jason Day, Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose, Daniel Berger, and Collin Morikawa

You may have noticed Phil Mickelson is on both of the "over-achieving" lists. That tells us that Sherwood is a course where he should outperform his baseline. The problem? His baseline is just 52nd best (of 78) in this week's field. Perhaps a week to target him for a Top 20 bet or look to draft him in one-round showdown contests.

FanDuel Focus

Rory McIlroy ($11,700): The big hitter has been a short-course bully over the years as he's able to stay aggressive and take advantage of his length. He should be able to use that length this week at Sherwood to attack the par 5s. Five of them! The Ulsterman was 18th in Par 5 Scoring last season and 9th when looking at just Par 5 Birdies or Better Percentage. He should have a lot of wedges in hand this week which is sometimes the area where he struggles but I think the par-5 scoring opportunities still make him a solid fantasy play.

Adam Scott ($9,500): Over the last two years he is 8th in performance out West and 2nd in performance on short courses. The only problem is where his game is trending. If you look at his 2-year metrics then he's top 10 in this field but dips to 12th if you look at just one year of results. If you isolate the stats even more then he jumps outside of the top 30 when looking at performance since the restart. Not ideal form but you are getting a nice salary here so you can take a shot and hope that his long-term pedigree starts to pop back up on a course that should suit him well. He won earlier this year just 35 miles down the road at Riviera Country Club.
