Welcome back to the Premier League Fulham! The schedule makers sure didn't do the Cottagers any favors. First up in their return to the top flight is a visit from Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool. In the 20/21 season Fulham actually took four out of a possible six points against the Reds, including a 1-0 win at Anfield! Those were very positive results but their form throughout the season was not good enough and Fulham were relegated.
Marco Silva was appointed manager after Scott Parker joined Bournemouth. The Portuguese had previously been in charge at Everton and Watford and it proved to be a wise hire from the Khan family. Fulham won the Championship and earned automatic promotion in their first attempt.
Both clubs have made good signings this summer and their preseason results have been solid. Fulham recently drew 1-1 with Villareal with Aleksandar Mitrovic sweeping home a low cross from new signing Kevin Mbabu. Most people will have watched Liverpool defeat Manchester City 3-1 in the Community Shield last weekend. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mo Salah and new signing Darwin Nunez found the back of the net in a perfect warm-up for the new season.
When asked by reporters if he thought his team was ready for the Premier League, Marco Silva said “no” which certainly made headlines. He went on to clarify his comments saying that the current players are ready but having only two recognized center defenders leaves them short of what's required. With a suspect defense and Mitrovic an unproven goal scorer at this level it's hard for me to see anything but a comprehensive win for the visitors.
