After a season of near-misses on the major stage, Rory McIlroy is the betting favorite as the PGA Tour kicks off the FedEx Cup Playoffs in Memphis.

McIlroy finished eighth or better in all four majors this year, including a third-place showing at The Open in his most recent start where he couldn't convert a share of the 54-hole lead. He'll look to get into the winner's circle this week as a favorite at TPC Southwind, which is hosting a playoff event for the first time.

The longtime host of a regular Tour stop that often fell the week before the U.S. Open, Southwind served as host of a WGC event each of the last three years. Now it will host the first of three Playoff events, with the top 125 players eligible this week but only the top 70 advancing to next week's BMW Championship in Delaware. The field currently stands at 125, with Tommy Fleetwood, Daniel Berger and Lanto Griffin all withdrawing, although it could jump back to 125 if three LIV Golf players (Hudson Swafford, Matt Jones and Talor Gooch) get a successful court ruling Tuesday to re-join for the postseason.

McIlroy is No. 3 in the world and begins the postseason at No. 6 in points, with Masters champ Scottie Scheffler leading the way. But McIlroy is a two-time FedEx Cup champ, the only player not named Tiger Woods to hold that distinction, and his recent form holds merit in the eyes of oddsmakers and bettors alike. The Ulsterman is a +1000 favorite at PointsBet Sportsbook, listed ahead of Patrick Cantlay (+1400), Scheffler (+1500) and Cameron Smith (+1500). Abraham Ancer, who won last year at TPC Southwind, has since joined LIV and will not factor in this week's field, while last week's winner Joohyung "Tom" Kim, who earned a Playoff berth with his five-shot Wyndham romp, is listed at +4500.
