MLB Futures Bets for Cy Young and MVP Awards

With Opening Day coming up later this week, I decided to make my futures bets for Cy Young and MVP in both leagues for the upcoming season. Please take a peek as I share my thoughts. During the regular season, I will be updating these frequently.

Odds via PointsBet.

National League MVP

Juan Soto +750

The 22-year-old Washington Nationals outfielder may very well be the best hitter in the game. Last season in 154 At Bats, Soto hit 14 home runs while posting a .351 batting average with an on base percentage of .490. In the 2019 season, Soto blasted 34 home runs and drove in 110 runs. He can flat out hit the baseball. As long as the Nationals are in contention, which they should be, Soto will be a favorite to win the National League MVP.

In the Sports Edge, MLB Draft Guide Soto is projected to for a.318 Batting Average, 115 Runs Batted In, and 42 Home Runs.

National League Cy Young

Jacob deGrom +400

If it's not broken, don't fix it. Sure, no one wants to put money on the guy with the shortest odds but let's be honest deGrom is the best pitcher in baseball. In 2018 and 2019, when deGrom pitched over 200 innings, his opponent's batting average was .196 and .207. This season the Mets will actually be contenders, so deGrom will get a chance to start high-profile games and get more wins. deGroms ERA will be under 2.50, and he will likely have over 280 strikeouts. I like deGrom to win his third Cy Young this season.

American League MVP

Gleyber Torres +2500

I think the Gleyber Torres breakout is coming this season. The 2020 season did not go well for Torres. In 136 at-bats, he batted .243 with three homers and only 16 RBI. We all know Torres is a much better player than that. This season, if he is healthy, I see him becoming a more consistent at the plate. In our 2021 MLB Draft Guide, Torres is projected for a .273 average, 34 HR and 99 RBI. Even on an offense as impressive as the Yankees, when Torres gets rolling, he can carry a team.

American League Cy Young

Lucas Giolito +450

The darling Chicago White Sox are one of the most bet teams to win the World Series this season. If they accomplish that goal, there is a good chance Lucas Giolito will win the American League Cy Young Award. For my money, Giolito is the best young arm in the Major Leagues. His stuff is filthy. In 2019, when Giolito pitched 176.2 innings; he struck out 228 batters. Even last season, in just 72.2 innings pitched, Giolito struck out 97 batters and posted a 3.48 ERA. This season we have Giolito projected for 230 strikeouts with a 3.55 ERA. I think those projections are conservative.
