NHL Betting Progress Report (Through January 13th)

Record: 39-20

Units: +14.77

Columbus Blue Jackets @ Carolina Hurricanes 7:00 PM ET

Our bets start today with the Carolina Hurricanes who have established themselves as one of the very best teams in the NHL over the past couple of seasons. As of now they sit tied for first place in the Metropolitan Division with the 50 points and a record of 24-7-2, just wow. They are winners of 8 out of the last 10 games and hold a record of 11-3-1 on home ice this season. I don’t need to tell you this is one of the best home ice teams in all of hockey, but I will by saying they have a goal differential of +26 at PNC Arena. Everything about this team is impressive and they are aided by being mostly healthy, which is a tough thing to come by given the COVID outbreaks in the league this season. Carolina grades out well in many stats but few are more important than their Corsi For percentage this season which ranks 2nd in the NHL at 55.4% on the season, meaning they are a dominant team at even strength. I would expect that we see starting goaltender Frederik Andersen make the start for the Canes and he just adds to this team’s impressive resume. Andersen ranks 2nd in the NHL in GAA this season at 1.96 and 4th in SV% at .929%. In addition, Andersen is 7-2 at home this season and has beaten Columbus twice already on the year. The last thing to note, and it’s important, the Canes are 9-6 against the spread on home ice this season!

On the away side we have the Columbus Blue Jackets and to say they are an extremely mediocre team is accurate. They are one of many teams this NHL season that just can’t seem to win consistently on the road and their record of 5-11 reflects that. The Jackets are 8-8 ATS on the road this season, which is not terrible, but they have lost 4 of the last 5 away games and were outscored 16-11 during that stretch. Columbus also does themselves no favors allowing the 5th most goals against per game this season at 3.56. They only win games by scoring goals and that will be an issue against a Carolina team that is 1st in team defense this season allowing just 2.21 goals per game. Full disclosure, I hopped on the Hurricanes Puck Line of -1.5 last night as the odds were up to +115 and that was too good to pass up. As of now, the juice sits at -110, which is still a great value considering the mismatch expected tonight. Our NBC Sports Edge game predictor engine also has high confidence in the Hurricanes covering the goals tonight and the model is 88-60 on the season in such predictions.

Seattle Kraken @ St. Louis Blues 8:00 PM ET

The Blues are hitting their stride on the season and it’s led to a tidal wave of goals! The Blues rank 6th in the NHL is goals per game with 3.44 and the numbers have been even better lately. Over the last 5 games, St. Louis has collected 20 goals and has hit the over in 4 of those 5 contests. Refining things even further, the Blues average 3.84 goals per game on home ice which is a decent uptick over the general number on the season. There’s no reason to expect this trend to stop tonight as the lineup is healthy and loaded with streaking forwards. Jordan Kyrou is in the midst of his best NHL season with 36 points, Vladimir Tarasenko has rebounded with 34 points and Pavel Buchnevich has proven to be a perfect offseason addition with 33 points! Tarasenko is still in COVID protocols as of now, but I imagine the Blues can overcome his absence given the opponent tonight.

The Kraken come into this game as the worst defensive team in the entire NHL. Their GAA of 3.71 is just staggering considering the goaltending talent they grabbed during the expansion draft, but they are all having bad seasons. The Kraken played last night in a 5-2 loss to the Dallas Stars so it is unlikely that Philip Grubauer will get the nod, instead expect Chris Driedger between the pipes. Dreidger holds a GAA of 3.49 and a SV% of .892% on the season, which is just plain bad. In the 9 games he has started for the Kraken the game total has gone over in 6 of them! The two teams combined also have an over the total record of 41-28-2 on the season which is a rate of just under 60% on the season. Our NBC Sports Edge game predictor is just shy of its highest confidence rating for the over tonight in this matchup but I think given the stats and trends this one should hit the over 6 goals for us! The even odds of +100 are also greatly welcomed!

The Picks:

Carolina Hurricanes -1.5 (-110 on PointsBet)

Kraken & Blues Over 6 Goals (+100 on PointsBet)
