If there are no more postponements this upcoming week, the NHL will be getting back into the normal swing of things. The big concern at this time is the state of playing in Canada with no fans allowed in Eastern Canada, only 250 fans in Winnipeg and 50 percent capacity in Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver.

That is tough as NHL revenues rely a lot on gate receipts from Canadian cities, especially Toronto and a reduction in revenues will only hurt the bottom line as far as the players and owners are concerned. The hope is to play games in Canada later in the season when restrictions may be taken away.

Look for the NHL to announce shortly a bunch of re-scheduled games as they have more than 100 to redo. They will play in the two-weeks set aside for the Olympic Games as they are not going to China and hopefully most of the games can be played from Feb. 7-21.

Be aware that there is still plenty of time for the NHL to postpone more games this week. Therefore, the column will be updated if need be, on Sunday evening before the start of a new week.

The Ducks should have John Gibson (COVID) back this week as he has not played since Jan. 4...Anthony Stolarz has been more than an adequate backup as he is 6-4-1 with a 2.29 GAA and a .929 save percentage, including his back-to-back losses since Gibson has been out, although he allowed only six goals on 72 shots...Lukas Dostal made his NHL debut Sunday and stopped 33 shots in a 4-3 shootout win over Detroit...Troy Terry potted his 22nd goal of the season Sunday, fourth best in the NHL...Hard to believe that he wasn’t selected as a Pacific Division all-star...Max Comtois has had a horrible offensive season with only one assist in his first 14 games but he finally found the back of the net in his 18th game and has three points in his last five games.

The Coyotes play all four games on the road this week, including three games in four nights...Look for Karel Vejmelka to play three times with Scott Wedgewood playing once if he is out of COVID protocol...Vejmelka was sensational Wednesday as he was like a brick wall, stopping 45 shots in a 2-1 over the Maple Leafs...Ryan Dzingel doubled his goal total in the contest with both Arizona goals to give him four...Jakob Chychrun has had a very tough go of it lately as he has been out since Dec. 10 with an upper body injury and when he finally got healthy, he went into COVID protocol...His name has been bandied about in trade rumors and while the Coyotes really could use a solid offensive defenseman, his trade value could be high enough to be worth dealing.

Notes

The Bruins finally got Tuukka Rask back between the pipes on Thursday as he returned from off-season hip surgery, stopping 25-of-27 Philadelphia shots for his first game and first win of the season...Jeremy Swayman had played so well for Boston but was the odd man out and while he understood the situation, it still had to be hard for the young netminder...David Pastrnak was slumping badly but his hat trick Thursday gave him seven goals and eight points in his last four games...Matt Grzelcyk had a career-best five point game Monday but was placed in COVID protocol Thursday. He had 11 points in his last 13 games...Brad Marchand had the hat trick Wednesday and has a five-game points streak with eight goals and 11 points, giving him 19 goals and 41 points in 29 games.

John Klingberg could be on the trade block as he is a pending UFA and contract talks are at a standstill. Klingberg does not feel appreciated by the Stars and if the Stars fall out of the playoff race, a deal elsewhere would seem to be the smartest move.

The Wild play Chicago in back-to-back games...Should there be any fisticuffs, then Marcus Foligno and/or Ryan Hartman should be in line to pick up some penalty minutes...Cam Talbot is still out of action but was back on the ice Thursday for an optional practice. He was injured in the Winter Classic, suffering a lower-body injury...Eric Staal has signed a professional contract with the Wild’s AHL affiliated in Iowa, hoping to get into playing shape to play for Canada at the upcoming Olympics...Joel Erikkson Ek is in COVID protocol...Kirill Kaprizov is expected to return to action on Jan. 14 after missing a game with an upper-body injury.

MONTREAL

@ Arizona, @ Dallas, @ Vegas, @ Colorado

Notes

The Rangers play three games in four nights...Igor Shesterkin should get a pair of starts with Alexandar Georgiev getting one...Shesterkin was outstanding Thursday as he stopped all 37 shots in a 3-0 shutout win over San Jose...Shesterkin has been amazing this season with a 16-4-2 record to go with a 1.99 GAA and a .939 save percentage. It is hard to believe that he was not named to the Metropolitan All-Star team as Frederik Andersen and Tristan Jarry were named to the team...Congratulations go out to Braden Schneider who scored his first career NHL goal Thursday in his first career game...Chris Kreider scored a pair of goals, giving him 23 as well as 34 points in 38 games.

Tired: vs. St. Louis (Friday)

Rested: None

Notes

The Kraken play four games this week, all at home with three games in four nights...Look for Philipp Grubauer and Chris Driedger to share the net this week...The Kraken are deep in the basement of the Pacific Division and are likely looking to be a contender for the top draft pick in 2022 and that is not a bad thing as they have Matthew Beniers, their top pick and number two overall in 2021...If they could add a Shane Wright to the fold, that will go a long way in helping up front to their top-six forward core...Yanni Gourde has been pointless in his last two games after having a four-game points streak...Jordan Eberle will be the Seattle representative at the All-Star Game in Las Vegas next month.

Rested: @ Los Angeles (Tuesday)

Notes

The Lightning are atop of the Atlantic standings with 56 points, three up on Florida, albeit playing three extra games and eight points ahead of Toronto, playing five more games than the Maple Leafs...Nikita Kucherov had the hat trick Tuesday and followed it up with two helpers Thursday, giving him four goals and 11 points in just seven games...GM Julien BriseBois does not expect the Lightning to do anything significant come trade deadline time and that makes sense since they are up against the salary cap...Steven Stamkos is having a great season with 18 goals and 45 points in 38 games...Alex Killorn is enjoying a career year as he has 11 goals and 35 points in 39 games...His career best is 49 points, two seasons ago and it appears that he is going to smash that mark this season.

Notes

The Canucks finish a five-game road trip this week...Matthew Highmore scored his first of the season on Thursday as he became the 19th Vancouver Canuck to score this season...After going 7-0-1 in their first eight games under Bruce Boudreau, the state of Florida was not kind to Vancouver as they dropped a pair of games to the Panthers and Lightning this week...Thatcher Demko played both games as he saw his seven-game winning streak come to an end...The good news coming out of the Florida trip was that Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser played after coming out of COVID protocol.

VEGAS

Games this week

vs. Pittsburgh, vs. Montreal

Tired: None

Rested: None

Notes

The Golden Knights finally had Jack Eichel back on the ice for practice on Tuesday as he is recovering from artificial disk replacement surgery in his neck...The former Sabre had the surgery Nov. 12 and he could return as early as next month as the initial prognosis had him returning to action in three-five months...It was not a great night for Robin Lehner against the Maple Leafs Tuesday as he gave up three goals on only 18 shots and then gave up a shootout goal to William Nylander in taking the loss...Shea Theodore, Nicolas Roy and Nolan Patrick were placed in COVID protocol before the start of Tuesday’s contest...The Golden Knights placed Lucas Elvenes on unconditional waivers in order to terminate his contract and was picked up by Anaheim...He wanted to return to Sweden.

WINNIPEG

Games this week

@ Washington, @ Nashville, @ Boston, @ Pittsburgh

Tired: @ Pittsburgh (Sunday)

Rested: None

Notes

The Jets are on the road for all four games this week, which includes three games in four nights...Connor Hellebuyck is expected to be between the pipes for three starts with Mikhail Berdin getting one start if Eric Comrie has not come out of COVID protocol...Kyle Connor hit the 20-goal mark Thursday with an empty net goal and added an assist in a 3-0 win over Detroit...He has 37 points in 34 games, 11 points better than the second place Pierre-Luc Dubois...Mark Scheifele has only nine goals and 23 points this season as the usual Winnipeg scoring leader is fifth in points...He was passed by Andrew Copp who had a pair of goals Thursday to give him 10 this season with 24 points...Dylan Samberg had an assist in his NHL debut Thursday.
